West Virginia ranks first for HPV-associated cancers and 47th for HPV vaccination series completion in the U.S., indicating a care gap that needs to be addressed. Mountains of Hope partnered with member Melissa Jensen, a physician assistant and professor at the University of Charleston, to create and pilot an HPV curriculum for health professional students, aiming to increase HPV vaccination rates across the state. Coalition Facilitator, Lauren Wright, co-presented the curriculum with Ms. Jensen in November 2024 to an audience of 21 nursing students and 21 physician assistant students at the University of Charleston. The presentation primarily focused on what HPV is, what HPV does, and the importance of receiving the full HPV vaccination series. The goal of the presentation was to improve the knowledge level of HPV and the intention level of recommending HPV vaccination to future patients. Pre- and post-tests were given and were completed by 41 of 42 participating students, and the results indicated a statistically significant increase in knowledge related to HPV and intention to recommend HPV vaccination to future patients.
