Mountains of Hope (MOH) implemented the Sun Safety Project, an environmental change project aimed at increasing access to sunscreen and decreasing melanoma incidence rates, in 2024. MOH placed 11 sunscreen dispensers in a variety of outdoor recreation areas across Mineral and Summers Counties during the summer of 2024.

Due to the success of the pilot season, MOH expanded the Sun Safety Project by placing 31 sunscreen dispensers with 9 new partner organizations across 9 counties–Pleasants, Putnam, Cabell, Mineral, Grant, Fayette, Lewis, Gilmer, and Calhoun–in 2025. Sunscreen dispensers have been placed at pools, lakes, rivers, community and state parks, and playgrounds and are being well utilized by community members.

We look forward to continued expansion of this project in future years. If you are interested in becoming a partner of the Sun Safety Project, please contact coalition manager Morgan Lounsbury (morgan.lounsbury@hsc.wvu.edu) to learn more.
